New Website Review

At first glance the Yahoo UI Grids/Reset style sheet seemed like a great little tool for web page layout. And don't get me wrong,it is. The issue we have with it is that the css won't validate. My jaw dropped when I noticed 60 plus errors when I tried to validate the css on the web page. The other issue is their use of cryptic div classes to make different grid layouts (ie. gc, yc etc). My desire to use a css framework is weakening but I am not one to give up; I am going to try a new framework called BlueTrip. I know the code validates and it uses a 24 grid system which seems to give enough control to build any type of layout you could want. So over the Christmas holidays I will be re coding the website to use the BlueTrip Css Framework.

The last issue I have with the site is the blog that you are reading. Ditto, the MODx document aggregator, is a very powerful tool and can be used in many creative ways. The issue I have with it is that it is not a blog right out of the box. When I look at the features included in other blogging systems like WordPress, Ditto just doesn't compare. I don't want to add another layer of complexity to my site by running a separate blog. At the same time I don't want to add a bunch of add-ons to Ditto and have issues trying to get all the extras working together. I have decided to explore whether I really need a blog in the traditional sense or maybe an article repository is more what I need. For now I will continue on with the set up as it is and research the features I really want and then build my own Ditto extension that has everything the website will need.
