New Website Launched

Well we decided that since we had some extra time we would give our site a makeover. That and the fact that it had been 4 years since the last site re design. A site re design is a great opportunity to enhance search engine optimization, website layout and structure. Keeping with the times we decided to add a blog to provide a free resource for anyone who has questions about Website Design and Development, Project Management and Multimedia production. We also tried to take advantage of some popular web technologies.

MODx Evolution For The Content Management System

When given the choice MODx is what we always choose for any web project. We find it has the best template system out of any of the big name CMS systems out there

YUI 2: Grids CSS for the layout

We are a big fan of Yahoo's YUI Javascript Library so we thought we would give their Grid CSS style sheet a try. It boasts a 1000 page layout combination grid system in just a 4kb file. It isn't the most user friendly system; while it isn't hard to make almost any grid combination you can think of, the class names aren't the easiest things to remember.

jQuery Javascript Library

We are using a jQuery slider called jFlow for the home page. We are also looking into adding some other features like menu animation and scrolling so we can maximize the extra page load for the framework. The slider works great and is easy to customize. We used MODx's built-in document aggregator Ditto to feed the slider text from pages on our CMS. So in a couple of lines of code we have a dynamic content slider that is indexed by search engines and adds some nice AJAX to our website.

This launch will complete phase 1 of 3 for our new website. We will be adding more jQuery items to the site, plus a DIY web resource centre and lastly we will share some of the documents and checklists we use for project management.
